© Newark Advertiser - Thank-you lunch for the Potwell Dyke volunteers at the Hearty GoodfellowVolunteers who helped to clear out Southwell’s Potwell Dyke following July’s disastrous floods enjoyed a slap-up pub lunch as a thank you.

Members of Southwell Flood Forum gathered at the Hearty Goodfellow on Church Street, where they enjoyed soup, sandwiches and drinks.

Church Street was among those worst hit by the flooding after the dyke failed to cope with the deluge.

Forum chairman Mr Mark Bertollini said: “I am amazed at the community spirit and how people have got stuck into helping.

“The job has been down to people’s goodwill and the response has been fantastic. We have had 15 to 20 people twice a week getting their boots on and helping to clear the dyke.

“We have removed most of the rubble and debris from this section of the dyke and now we need to continue with the rest.

“We hope to find someone to take overall responsibility for maintaining the dyke because at the moment there are 80 riparian owners.”
