This month we turn the spotlight on summer cloud bursts and flash flooding. Fears surrounding these events are well founded. Torrential rainfall in the summer of 2013 caused severe damage to more than 200 homes and businesses in Southwell. Southwell Flood Forum volunteers have campaigned successfully for a variety of measures to reduce the town’s flood risk. However, the risk can not be eliminated entirely and vigilance remains key. Whilst the events of 2013 were exceptional weather patterns have changed and bursts of torrential rain have become common place throughout the country.
Things to consider to keep you flood aware and ready.
Instal water butts at your home to capture and hold rain water.
Consider reducing paved and tarmac areas on your property. Replace with permeable surfaces. Plant more shrubs.
Make a personal flood plan for you and consider those around you, especially those who might be vulnerable. Consider packing a ‘grab bag’ of essentials. This could include essential medication and important documents as well as bottled water, torch, warm waterproof clothing and baby care items.
Check your own local flood risk on the Environment Agency website.
Find out who the SFF wardens covering your part of Southwell are. Maybe consider volunteering to be trained as a warden yourself. We always need more volunteers.
