Southwell will receive more than £700,000 of state funding for flood defences.

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Liz Truss, this morning announced in Parliament that £720,000 of funding will be heading to the town – but a £125,000 local contribution is required for the works to be completed.

Lowdham and Gunthorpe will also receive state funding following lobbying from Newark MP Robert Jenrick and local councillors.

Mr Jenrick said:

“I am delighted for Southwell, Lowdham and Gunthorpe that our campaign and lobbying at all levels of Government has borne fruit.

“The Prime Minister, Chancellor and both Secretaries of State, Owen Paterson and Liz Truss, have been bombarded by our campaigning efforts and have listened and taken action.”
