There has been a huge take-up of Government grants that have been made available retrospectively to repair flood damage in Southwell.

A total of 215 out of 246 homes and businesses affected by the extreme floods of July 2013 have applied for the renewal and repair grant, being administered through Newark and Sherwood District Council.

District and county councillor Mr Bruce Laughton told a town council meeting: “It has been a longer process than it probably should have been, but this is good news for the town.”

Town councillor Mrs Penny Rainbow said she appreciated the efforts of everybody involved in making sure they were supported.

“It is said that 246 homes and businesses were affected but in reality the whole town has been impacted,” she said.

“The Southwell Flood Forum in particular has put in a great deal of effort to ensure that everyone who wants help has received it.

“On some occasions they have gone back two or three times to properties to make sure the application has been completed properly.”

A computer-generated model, which will look at ways of alleviating potential flooding problems in Southwell will be unveiled at a public meeting provisionally set for September 3.
