A REPORT drawn up five years ago had warned of the kind of flooding which engulfed one of Nottinghamshire’s most historic towns in July.

Hundreds of homes were affected when an extreme tropical storm hit Southwell, causing millions of pounds worth of damage in less than two hours.

Some residents have still not be able to return to their homes, with families still living in a hotel and rented accommodation two months on.

A forum formed by residents to try to prevent the flooding happening again has seen a report which was drawn up by specialist engineers in the wake of floods in 2007.

It was commissioned by the Environment Agency, and the forum say it warns that Southwell’s drainage infrastructure meant it would be prone to flooding.

They have now called on Nottinghamshire County Council to take charge of efforts to beef up the town’s flood prevention, with the authority pledging a new investigation.
