WHILE works to finalise the design of the scheme at Potwell Dyke are ongoing, a number of different schemes are continuing to progress across Southwell.
You may remember from previous editions that works on Church Street have been split into two stages, with the first completed in February.
Phase two of this part of the scheme is now underway and works on site include the installation of new gullies and a twin gully.
In times of heavy rain-fall, surface water has previously passed along the road to Easthorpe, and it is this movement of water along the street which has led to property flooding in the past.
Once the phase two works are complete in early June, any surface water will be collected by the gullies and diverted along the existing Severn Trent drainage system to join Potwell Dyke further downstream of Commissioners Bridge.
It is when looking at the bigger picture that the benefits of these works on Church Street come to light, most notably the early collection of this surface water will mean that it can be passed downstream towards the Greet before the second wave of ‘dirty water’ from the upstream rural areas.
Another scheme in Southwell which will be progressing further in the weeks to come is the second phase of works on Lower Kirklington Road.
This is another area where surface water collects during storm conditions, which puts properties at risk of flooding. The installation of beany kerbs will help to capture and transport water directly into the Dumble and away from nearby housing.
The works on Lower Kirklington road are set to last for three weeks.
