Southwell Flood Forum met with residents, Severn Trent Water and Nottinghamshire County Council Flood Risk Management Team, Drainage and Highways Officers, about their exploratory findings from the surface water and sewage systems along The Ropewalk flood path from Lowes Wong school to Archers Field. We now have a better understanding of the problems and pipe work since they identified

  • 2 broken drains that are to be repaired.
  • It is unknown who has given the Co-op permission to connect their surface water system to The Ropewalk,  both Severn Trent Water and Nottinghamshire County Council were unsure.
  • All the drainage from Appletree Close is connected to the foul sewer.  We’re asking why has this been allowed.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Property Management team for Lowes Wong School explained new drainage works to protect classrooms from flooding

  • but it could be at the cost of putting residents homes at risk.
  • they’re also draining surface water into a combined system, without the permission of Severn Trent Water.

We have a plan to connect the surface water to The Ropewalk down the hill with gulleys rather than offlets but this will take time and money. Overall it was agreed that the drainage on The Ropewalk could just about cope with the surface water from the road. However all agreed it could not cope with the existing run-off from Lowes Wong School and the pumped water from the Co-op.

Southwell Flood Forum will talk to Nottinghamshire County Councillors and all already involved, to provide suitable solutions for the systems to operate effectively.

Following conversations with County Councillor Bruce Laughton, Nottinghamshire County Council have agreed in principle to connect the surface water system Appletree Close to the large pipe 375mm further down The Ropewalk.  Nottinghamshire County Council Highways are to meet the Property Team with regard to problems of surface water from Lowes Wong School.
