The development of four homes in Southwell has been given the go-ahead after councillors decided they were satisfied that flooding concerns had been addressed.

Newark and Sherwood District Council planning committee approved the application for the homes at Easthorpe, submitted by Parker Home Developments.

The four two-bedroom houses will replace two existing semi-detached bungalows, which will be demolished.

The application was opposed by Southwell Town Council, on the grounds that the area was flooded by the Potwell Dyke in 2013.

It argued the development would also be over-intensive.

Committee member Mr Julian Hamilton, who represents Southwell, said:

“The units are of the size we need in Southwell and the design looks neat and tidy.

“The biggest problem is with the flooding. Houses in that area flooded to a depth of three or four inches. Many of those people were old or disabled and found it difficult to cope.

“It will be difficult to convince those around this development that it won’t increase the risk of flooding.

“We need more evidence on that.”
