Elderly residents forced to leave their homes because of flooding say they are happy to be home in time for Christmas — but the impact of what happened will never leave them.

Almost all residents of Pot–well Close, Southwell, were forced out after they were swamped by several feet of water when two months’ rainfall fell in 30 minutes in July.

Those who could stay in their homes endured months of repair work to fix the damage.

The work was carried out by Newark and Sherwood Homes.

Two residents from the tight-knit community have since moved to other areas but all but one of its other residents have been able to return in time for Christmas.

Mr Des Malbon, who celebrated his 91st birthday at home, said he was glad to be back.

Mr Malbon, a Navy veteran, said although he was pleased to be home, he could not help but think of all the possessions he had lost.
