Residents worked together to hold back a potential flood after a warning was received for Southwell.

They rallied to clean out a dyke after receiving an alert from the Environment Agency that there was a possibility of flooding when a severe weather warning was issued.

Mr Mark Bertolini, chairman of Southwell Flood Forum, also called residents to form a working party, which went out on Saturday morning to clean out the Potwell Dyke.

Around 20 residents took part at short notice, removing rubble and rubbish brought down from up-stream, together with over-hanging vegetation that could contribute to blockages in extreme weather.

Mr Bertolini, of Easthorpe, said: “Nothing has been done by the authorities to clear the Potwell. There is so much debris.

“We started where we know there to be a problem, near the bridge on Church Street.

“We managed to increase the flow of the water. Although it is only a small percentage of what needs to be removed, it is a start.

“It is normally the responsibility of landowners whose property borders a water-course, but there is so much accumulated debris householders cannot be expected to deal with the problem themselves.”

Mrs Sue Rogers, chairman of Southwell Town Council, praised the efforts of the volunteers.
