A study of flooding in Southwell needs to be fully comprehensive and take into account the whole town, according to residents and councillors.

Nottinghamshire County Council is to undertake a flood modelling study following July’s severe flooding.

At a town council meeting, members said it needed to take into account the whole of the Southwell bowl where flood water runs-off.

Mr Paul Handley said: “We have to be 100% sure the whole area is covered. It should be unambiguously the whole of the Southwell catchment area.”

Councillors said the data on which analysis was based should be made available, and that the drains and drainage system should be included in the study.

Mr Mark Bertolini, chairman of Southwell Flood Forum, said it had met with a county council officer and walked round the town with them.

He said the forum had also asked for the period for comments to be submitted to be extended to September 30.

He said it was meeting the Internal Drainage Board, and would raise the possibility of it adopting Potwell Dyke, which currently has 80 riparian owners (those who own land next to it).

A resident asked for an Advertiser story from 1995 to be read out, which referred to plans for a watercourse off Halam Road to resolve flooding.

He wanted to know what happened to the plan and the money it would have cost.
