Water ran off the ground and burst out of dykes and sewers, causing millions of pounds of damage to homes, businesses and vehicles. Walls collapsed, cars were left floating in the street and the damage to property was so extensive that around a dozen families have still not been able to return to their homes nine months on.

Last night, hundreds of residents turned out to hear about the progress made in trying to find a solution to severe floods that are meant to happen once in 100 years but have struck the town three times since 2007.
