The Emergency Planning Team has submitted its ambitious Road Closure Plan to Nottinghamshire County Council for approval by the Highways Department.

Our Road Closure Plan for Southwell is thought to be the biggest and most complex in the country. The team has devised a systematic closure scheme to allow various roads to be closed when a flooding emergency is declared; this will help prevent bow-waves damaging property and help keep motorists safe by preventing vehicles entering dangerous flood water.

The Southwell Road Closure Plan has over 8 road closure points, with 21 sets of signs, each of which will be managed by a designated Road Closure Flood Warden, who will be responsible for watching for various ‘trigger’ levels to be reached to initiate the closure . These wardens will have the legal delegated responsibility from Nottingham County Council Highways department to close the roads officially.

The road closure wardens have already received training in Health and Safety and Water Awareness, and once Nottingham County Council has approved the Road Closure Policy it will roll out across Southwell; with one last training session on using and positioning the road closure signs and equipment.
