Heavy rain overwhelming drains and sewers, and the overflowing of the Potwell Dyke were the main contributors to flooding in Southwell in July, according to the results of a survey completed by residents.

Surveys from affected homes have been collected by Southwell Flood Forum and the Potwell Dyke Flood Group.

The results suggested the Potwell Dyke was unable to cope with the amount of water from upstream.

Mrs Katy Todd, a member of the groups, said: “A series of dams formed at crucial points from debris carried down. The dams then burst because of the volume of water that was collected, causing powerful surges.

“It was the force of the surges that caused walls and buildings to collapse, which in turn caused further blockages.”
