Nothing like the weather warning to stir people into action!
Southwell Flood Forum Chairman, Mark Bertolini made a last minute decision to “do something” to help clear the huge amounts of debris that was washed down stream a month ago and was slowing down the flow of the water course.

The flood alert the day before prompted the DIY job. East Midland Television came down with Councillor Sue Rogers who had made sure there were sandbags available at the Court House if people needed them. Sue said the Town Council would help any way it could and praised the efforts of the volunteers. She agreed that it was shocking that the Lead Flood Authority had not yet done anything to clear the dyke.
I think we can say today was a great success. Around 20 people involved all helping riparian owners clear the rubble and debris from the Church Street Bridge towards the garden at the Hearty Goodfellow pub, enabling the water to flow more freely. Much remains to be done.
Further working parties will take place – One is planned for next Saturday 31st August.
Provisionally we will meet at the bridge at Shady Lane at 10am. Bring flask/packed lunch, wellies/boots, strong gloves – we may lunch at the Hearty? Check here or our Facebook page for any change of plans nearer the time.
There is a huge length of Dyke to clear. If other working parties would like to take on a stretch, please let us know as arrangements will be made to deal with removal of debris. Contact us at potwell@southwellfloodforum.org.uk
We are aware from the feedback we have been receiving via our questionnaire that in addition to Potwell Dyke there are other ditches and dykes around Southwell that require attention. If you would like to arrange a working party to tackle of of those, let us know at info@southwellfloodforum.org.uk
