Gullies and drains in Southwell are to be cleaned by Nottinghamshire County Council within the next four to six weeks.

The work was among a number of pledges the council made to members of Southwell Flood Forum at a meeting last week.

The council is the lead authority responsible for co-ordinating the response to flooding issues affecting Southwell.

Around 250 homes were flooded in July when two months of rain fell in the town in just 30 minutes.

Mr Bruce Laughton, Southwell’s county councillor, said the authority would also look at some of the issues affecting surface water flooding, help to clear material removed from the Potwell Dyke by volunteers and look to help provide flood wardens.

Mr Laughton said: “We are also going to be writing to Defra explaining the town has been flooded on numerous occasions in the last 100 years.

“We will be looking for funding for them in the next 12 to 18 months for any schemes that come up.”

Mr Laughton praised the efforts of the forum.

He said: “It’s all been extremely positive. I have got to pay tribute to the forum which has been extremely helpful and professional.

“I’m impressed with the work they have done in such a short time.”
