The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, was at the Bramley Apple pub in Southwell today (Tuesday) detailing Government support on flooding.

He told the Advertiser the Treasury would contribute towards a £1.8m plan aimed at improving Southwell’s flood defences.

“I’ve seen with my own eyes and have spoken to the community here myself, and there’s a credible case for this flood defence to be funded.

“To announce that today wouldn’t be proper (because of the by-election), but people can be rest assured, in the community, that I’ve seen this for myself.

“There are two things which clearly we can help with, that is first of all making sure we prevent this kind of thing happening again, I think the fact it’s happened three times in the last 15 years or so shows we need some serious work on the flood defences here,” he said.

The Bramley Apple was among 240 properties affected by flood water in July when two months’ rain fell in just 30 minutes.
