After months of speculation, Newark and Sherwood District Council has agreed to contribute £¼m towards flood mitigation in the area.

However, Southwell, one of the worst affected areas of the July 2013 floods, still doesn’t know how much of that it will receive.

A flood mitigation scheme for Southwell will cost £1.875m.

The Government has pledged £720,000 of that but the rest must come from partner agencies and the community.

So far, Nottinghamshire County Council has pledged £600,000, Southwell Town Council a total of £60,000 and the community is trying to raise £125,000 as its contribution through the Southwell Flood Fund.

Newark and Sherwood District Council was the only body not to have committed to a firm amount of money.

Now the authority has agreed to give £250,000 towards flood mitigation measures across its area, but it has yet to decide how much of that will be allocated to Southwell.
