Southwell town councillors are to object to every planning application that comes before them on the basis of flood risk.
The decision of the council’s planning committee, a consultee on applications, could tie up decision-makers Newark and Sherwood District Council in red tape.
It has been criticised by the district council’s planning committee chairman, Mr David Payne, who said each application should be judged on its merit.
The town council’s planning committee had already decided to object to an application for 40 homes off Nottingham Road over flooding concerns when a motion was made, and passed unanimously, to object to all future applications.
