This year the sun shone on our event which commemorated the flood in 2013 and offered a chance to enjoy a fun time – no talk of floods, no pressure to raise funds.

There was tough competition with other social events in the local calendar and the Wimbledon Men’s final. However, many people turned out to enjoy music from MOCtet Barbershop Chorus. Southwell Choral Society and Alex and get involved in the fun ‘sporty’ activities.

Sadly only one Tug o War team turned up despite interest from many others, but with supporters and bystanders they formed another team and the two teams had the best of three pulls cheered on by the crowd. It seems that age won over youth, so Caunton Young Farmers (oldie!) received the trophy, with the Caunton Young Farmers (young ‘uns) as runner-up.

While the aim wasn’t fund-raising, we were pleased that £250 could be added to the growing Southwell Flood Fund.

In addition, the surplus BBQ burgers and hot dogs will be enjoyed at a Lions Event for the children visiting from Chernobyl later this month; Holy Trinity School, Friends of Southwell Park and Annie Mae Wright and Eleanor Oldfield raised money for their respective causes.

Our thanks to

  • Patrick Lynn for the loan of the bouncy castle which was very popular.
  • Sam Scott, Southwell City Football Club and Southwell Town Council for the use of the pavilion, loan and help with gazebos and use of football pitch.
  • Gadsbys for donating the rolls and baps for the barbecue.
  • Newark Community First Aiders for attending – luckily their services weren’t needed, but it’s reassuring to have their presence. The Lions kindly gave them a £100 donation.
  • volunteers from the Forum who helped with the stalls
  • all who supported this event,
  • finally, and by no means least, we thank the Lions for their organisation and running the BBQ
